Values: Fair and Sustainable

PhytoTrade Africa was founded by African NGOs with considerable experience in sustainable environmental management and rural development. We promote fair trade and sustainable production. In today's climate of corporate responsibility, our clients appreciate the assurance that PhytoTrade products are environmentally-friendly and fairly traded.

Fair Trade

Fair trade ensures that everyone involved in production and processing are given a fair price for their goods and services. Our members and clients benefit from better business practices. PhytoTrade promotes this through:

  • creating a Fair Trade Charter, based on the criteria of the International Federation for Alternative Trade, This was endorsed by members at the AGM in April 2002;
  • creating partnership between all involved in the trading process - producers, workers, traders and consumers;
  • promoting fair trade in various fora, including international networks, trade shows and conferences.

Sustainable Production

People depend on their natural resources for their livelihoods. There's no better incentive for conservation and sustainable management of these resources. PhytoTrade promote this through:

  • creating an Environmental Charter, which was endorsed by members at the AGM in April 2002. The Charter will ensure that all PhytoTrade products are grown, managed and harvested in a environmentally sustainable manner;
  • providing detailed ecological profiles on each product for clients;
  • facilitating additional environmental audits on request.

Information Handling

Through its activities, PhytoTrade inevitably comes into contact with, and generates, information of a commercially sensitive and/or confidential nature. In order to protect itself, its members and its commercial partners from the threat of inappropriate use and dissemination of this type of information, it has therefore been agreed by the membership to develop a Confidential Information Handling Policy (MS Word ~44k, or pdf ~128k), governing the terms and conditions under which such information can be distributed and used within PhytoTrade.
